Welcome message from Commissioner Louis Michel

Are you between 16 and 18 years old? And European? Nothing should stop you from participating in our European Development Youth Prize 2008/09.

If you are lucky, you can even win a trip to Africa! All you have to do is send us a poster or a video on the following topics: "gender equality", "children and youth" or "cultural diversity", as this year's overall theme is human development.

You stand a good chance to be among the winners, as we have 27 first prizes, one in every EU Member State. All 27 winners will go to Africa for a five-day trip, where they will also get an insight into the development work, as the group will visit cooperation projects. Teachers who supervised their students are also invited.
But also second prize winners will not lose out. The 27 runners-up will be invited to a prize-winning ceremony together with their teachers and the first prize winners.

In this way, students will be able to exchange views and experiences among themselves and, we hope, also with others. You might want to share your knowledge and debate with colleagues and friends. This can help enormously to raise awareness about development issues among young Europeans and kick-start a fruitful discussion on the future of Europe's development cooperation. Young people are given the opportunity to better understand the situation in Africa and what can be done, and they might see that development policy is not just about poorer people in far-away countries, but concerns us all.

Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid
